We all heard.. many times.. Bush's story about how bin Laden was using a satellite phone. Someone talked about how we could eavesdrop on him, so bin Laden stopped using the satellite phone. Okay, sounds plausible.
Here's what the Post says: "But it appears to be an urban myth."
How did we learn about bin Laden's satphone, then?
The al Qaeda leader's communication to aides via satellite phone had already been reported in 1996 -- and the source of the information was another government, the Taliban, which ruled Afghanistan at the time.
Porter Goss gave a 'rare' interview to Good Morning America today. In this interview, Goss admitted that bin Laden and al-Zarqawi have not been caught simply because they are better than the CIA. That's right. The head of the CIA admitted that two people are more skilled than the organization he controls. In his own words:
Al Qaida leaders Bin Laden and al-Zarqawi haven't been found "primarily because they don't want us to find them and they're going to great lengths to make sure we don't find them," Goss said
So it's that easy? All it takes to beat the CIA is simply to not wish to be found.
Open thread for anyone following testimony on the Hill this morning from Oil CEOs.
I tuned in a bit late, but so far I've only heard a bunch of whining about how it's hard work, regulations get in the way, consumers are to blame for 'panic buying', and some garbage about 'tight supply'.
So far, the CEO statements sound like justifications for a lack of profits. 'We're investing', 'Hurricane!', 'Too much regulation' etc.
Can't wait for the questions! Questions now beginning!
It looks like Forrester is really reaching now. Fresh off his flip on embryonic stem-cells, Forrester is preparing to use personal comments from Corzine's ex-wife against him.
Joanne Corzine magically decided that yesterday was the day that she would break her silence about the Corzine marriage. Surely it's just a coincidence that she chose to do this 5 days before the election. And, oddly enough, her comments mirror exactly the Forrester talking points about Corzine being tied to the 'bosses'. Take a step inside for some excerpts.
You'd think Bush would have learned after his joke at the press club about "Now where are those WMDs?"
Via drudge, we learn that the President is now joking about the CIA leak investigation and the indictment of Scooter Libby.
THE PRESIDENT: Please don't tell me that the government leaks secrets about conversations to the -- Q Well, I have my sources in the government. THE PRESIDENT: You do? Okay, well I'm not going to ask you who they are, of course. (Laughter.) Q No, please. THE PRESIDENT: Inside joke here, for my team. (Laughter.)
Doug Forrester's campaign is getting desperate in the final days running up to the NJ gubernatorial election. While Forrester stuck with the GOPist position of opposing embryonic stem-cell research to get through the primary, Doug has finally realized that New Jersey voters are not prepared to take a step backwards and affirm the policies of the Bush Administration.
Just when you thought GOPists couldn't sink any lower. Jeb Bush has taken to playing the 'blame game' in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma. Who is he blaming? Not FEMA. No, no. They've apparently done a heck of a job. No, Jeb says "If anybody wants to blame anybody, blame me."
Today's web New York Times has a picture of the national debt clock in New York City. It shows 6.71 trillion dollars of debt. However, according to the Treasury, the debt on 9/30/2003 was 6.78 trillion dollars. The national debt as of right now is 7.01 trillion dollars. Why is the NYT using an old and inaccurate picture?
There was just a great piece on All Things Considered about the whole electability thing. Wish I had more details, but make sure to check it out when they put it online tonight!
At the bottom of the CBS News story on the O'Neill interview, there are some comments from 'administration officials' towards the end of the article, smearing former Secretary O'Neill and essentially calling him incompetent. [more]
