Why McCain's Gaffe Can NOT Be Innocent

Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 01:16:44 PM PDT

From Marc Ambinder:

McCain In Amman, Jordan Today:

McCain: Well, it’s common knowledge and has been reported in the media that Al Qaeda is going back into Iran and is receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran. That’s well known and it’s unfortunate. So I believe that we are succeeding in Iraq - the situation has dramatically improved, but I also want to emphasize time and again Al Qaeda is on the run, but they are not defeated. We are seeing a major battle take place in Mosul as we speak. The southern part of Iraq has other difficulties as we well know. So I am pleased with the progress, we have a long way to go, and I am deeply concerned about Iranian influence, not only in Iraq, but on nuclear weapons; on sponsorship of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations, and if we leave Iraq it will enhance Iranian influence in the region to the detriment, I think, of every nation in the region.

[Lieberman whispers in McCain's ear]

McCain: I’m sorry; the Iranians are training the extremists, not Al Qaeda. Not Al Qaeda. I’m sorry.

Musharraf and the Islamist Bomb

Wed Aug 01, 2007 at 03:09:02 PM PDT

As we all know, Obama has endorsed surgical strikes against high level Salafi militants in Waziristan:

If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will.

The primary objection is that this would destabilize Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf's government, paving the way for Islamist stewardship over nuclear weapons.  The idea that Pakistan is on the verge of becoming an Islamist state has been a consistent theme in teevee punditry, and it really ought to be dispelled..

Rasmussen: Webb, Miller closing in on Allen

Tue Feb 14, 2006 at 08:02:39 AM PDT

Rasmussen 2/8/06 (1/10/05)

George Allen (R) - 48% (57%)
Harris Miller (D) - 35% (27%)

George Allen (R) - 49%
James Webb (D) - 37%

A twenty point drop in the margin in a month, very impressive.

As for favorability:

Senator Allen's favorable numbers have also declined since January. Sixty-one percent (61%) now view him favorably; in January, 70% viewed him favorably.

Only about a third of voters view either Miller or Webb favorably. Another third or so "not sure" of either man, meaning that one of the key aspects of this election will be who defines how the challengers are viewed by most voters.

It seems as though already ~ a third of VA voters have an unfavorable opinion of both Webb and Miller.  That may be a problem.  On the other hand, Allen's favorability is rapidly declining.

It looks like both Webb and Miller have a decent shot at taking out Allen.

The incredible incompetence of this president and his administration has put our troops at risk and put our country at greater risk than we ought to be.

This material is golden.  The rest of Kerry's comments after the bump.

In Defense of Anarchism

Thu Aug 12, 2004 at 01:25:49 AM PDT

After all of those rants y'all have written against anarchism in the RNC thead, I feel as if my honor has been impugned.

You see, I'm an anarchist.  An anarcho-syndicalist, to be precise.  And I'd like to clear up a few misconceptions...

NLRB: Grad students in private universities have no right to unionize!

Sat Jul 17, 2004 at 05:40:35 PM PDT

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/16/education/16union.html

"The fast-growing movement to unionize graduate students at the nation's private universities suffered a crushing setback yesterday when the National Labor Relations Board reversed itself and ruled that students who worked as research and teaching assistants did not have the right to unionize.

In a case involving Brown University, the labor board ruled 3 to 2 that graduate teaching and research assistants were essentially students, not workers, and thus should not have the right to unionize to negotiate over wages, benefits and other conditions of employment.

The Republican-controlled board reversed a four-year-old decision involving New York University, a private institution, in which the board, then controlled by Democrats, concluded that graduate teaching and research assistants should be able to unionize because their increased responsibilities had essentially turned them into workers."

The administration's latest victory in the war against worker rights.  At least it's still legal to unionize in public universities in a few (non-"right to work") states... for now anyways.
