Mindless school districts strike again!

Tue May 27, 2008 at 10:59:39 PM PDT

In the wake of the teacher having her students persecute a kindergartener who possibly has Asperger's Syndrome by ostracizing him, it must be open season on schoolchildren near the end of the school year.

Middle school students aren't necessarily going to do whatever the teacher tells them, no matter what.  So to enforce often-arbitrary school rules (in this case, a dress code that would ban someone wearing an American flag t-shirt), the principals had them arrested.

As Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up.

Some of you might think that "these kids deserve it - their beef at not being able to wear un-preppy clothes is trivial.

Well, so was this.

I think what we have here is the principle that what good is power if you can't abuse it?

Hopefully, the school district and the mindless police officers involved in this incident will feel the full brunt of Tinker v. Des Moines and decide that settling the lawsuit early saves the school district embarrassing and costly litigation.

It's also worth noting that one of the dissenters in Tinker was Hugo Black, a former Klansman who used anti-Catholic bigotry to discredit witnesses at the trial of a Klansman accused of murder.
